Rechartering has a new name and a new home. Unit renewal now runs through Organization Manager on my.scouting.org, and most units can finish it in one sitting.
The video below walks through the whole process in under three minutes, including the one validation error that stops more units than anything else. Every step is written out underneath if you would rather read it than watch it.
Before You Start
- You must be a member of your unit’s Key 3. Nobody else can sign the renewal.
- Every registered leader needs current Safeguarding Youth Training. This is where renewals get stuck.
- Have a payment method ready. ACH, credit or debit card, or Google Pay.
Gulf Coast Council policy is that leaders with expired Safeguarding Youth Training are removed from council roles and are not reregistered until the training is complete, so check your roster before you start rather than after.
Renewing Your Unit, Step by Step
- Log in to my.scouting.org with your username and password, or with a Google or Apple login you have already registered.
- Open the menu at the upper left, then choose your unit from the organization dropdown.
- Click Organization Manager, which appears below the dropdown once you have picked a unit.
- Click Unit Renewal in the left sidebar.
- Clear any charter validation errors. See the next section if you have one.
- Sign the approval as a member of the Key 3.
- Review your Be A Scout pin.
- Choose a payment option and pay. The fee is shown for each option as you click it.
- That is it. Your unit is renewed through its next renewal date.
The Error That Stops Most Units
If Unit Renewal shows a charter validation error, the usual cause is a registered leader whose Safeguarding Youth Training has lapsed, or whose training expires within a week of your renewal date.
The fastest fix is to ask that leader to complete Safeguarding Youth Training. The council can suspend a leader to clear the block instead, but that is nobody’s first choice.
Do Not Leave This Until the Last Day
A correction can take an overnight roll before the block actually lifts, so a leader finishing training on your renewal date may not clear it in time. Renewal grace periods are being phased out, which makes starting early more important than it used to be.
Check Your Be A Scout Pin
Renewal asks you to review your unit’s pin before you pay, and it deserves more than a quick glance. The pin is what families see when they search BeAScout for a unit near them. An old meeting location, a contact who moved away, or a missing description quietly costs you Scouts. Fix it here while you have it open.
The New February 2028 Deadline
Effective October 1, 2026, Scouting America is moving every unit onto one common renewal deadline of February 29, 2028. If your unit expired after September 30, 2026, your renewal includes a pro-rated amount on top of the 2026 to 2027 charter fee, and that carries you through to the new date. From then on, every unit in the country renews on the same cycle.
